Selah Church Retreat 2012

April 22nd, 2012

Church Retreat 2012 – Selah

Welcome to our 2012 Church Retreat themed “Selah.” Selah is a Hebrew word used in the Old Testament to denote pausing in order to reflect. This year, we felt a clear sense that it was going to be a year of storms. Amidst challenges and busyness, we are choosing selah this memorial day weekend as a missional community. It is in those places of “selah” that we get perspective of all that is going on around us. Perspective is like being in the eye of a storm – the place of peace and stillness where we can get clarity. We can then re-order our lives and bring transformation as we allow God to meet us, fill us anew, and follow Him with confidence and trust.

Speaker:  Chris Rattay

Chris Rattay is a graduate of Claremont McKenna College, and has lived in urban Los Angeles for 12 years. He spent time in South LA and USC, promoting efforts of justice and reconciliation between different ethnic groups. Chris served on staff with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship at USC and was an Associate Pastor at Epicentre Church before moving into Lincoln Heights and planting a church. Chris also started IntheCity, a non-profit ministry and initiative to mobilize and train leaders from within the city for the city. Chris enjoys coaching track and football at Lincoln High School, as well as his son’s T-ball team. Chris is married to his wife Maggie and have three children: Josiah, Jaden, and Samantha. Besides telling stories, Chris loves playing golf and watching Jack Bauer save the world.

Pastoral Letter From John, 10-8-11

October 8th, 2011

Dear Epicentre Family,

I'd like to take a few minutes to share with you some reflections about life and Epicentre.

As many of you know, I've been an Apple fan for a l-o-o-o-ng time. And of course, I've been a fan of Steve Jobs. Here's a confession: I regularly read a website called "Cult of Mac". :)

I don't think Steve Jobs’ passing was a surprise to anyone who's been following Apple recently. But still, I think his death seemed like a sudden shock. It's a reminder that each of us only has one life to live. That each of us does have the ability to choose what we live for. To choose to make tough choices. To persevere in difficulty. Because we have a vision for something insanely great, as Steve Jobs would sometimes say.

Of course, that's what Jesus did. He gave his life for you and me. Not to live a life of middling mediocrity. Not to live a life for short-term returns and long-term loss. But to live a life of significance and meaning because it is focused on the right things.

I'm really appreciative because many of you, along with our staff, have laid down your lives for the sake of the kingdom and the gospel. By helping your children sleep after a longer-than-usual night at lifegroup. By investing in others even when it seems you don't have time for yourself. By getting up after you've fallen into an old sin pattern. By continuing to try and understand parts of the Bible that don't seem understandable at first glance. By setting up chairs early on Sunday morning. By having Sunday lunch with some people you don't know very well.

Though we can't always see it, those acts of obedience (and faith that if we do the right things, God will see) are paying off. Our kids are learning great things. People are coming to faith. Families are slowly finding some order in the midst of chaos. People are getting loved on. God is bringing new, passionate people to Epicentre, and they keep telling me how welcoming everyone is.

I'm really grateful for that. As you might remember, over this past year, we've received a number of encouraging (and prophetic words) telling us God is going to bring breakthrough. In line with that, our church leadership has been working to strengthen our body for what God has in mind for us: listening to families so we can better minister to them; focusing on developing new leaders from APU and Fuller; bringing better organization to the infrastructure of our church so our growth can be sustained. Keep praying for us.

I feel blessed to be part of our body! And excited for what's ahead. As this Fall begins, let's keep pressing into him, praying and supporting each other, and looking forward to what God has for us.

Blessings,

John Lo
